Effect of Music on Attention to Visual Stimuli in Peripheral Visual Field

Author #1

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of music listening on attention to visual stimuli within the left peripheral visual field in college students without diagnosed traumatic brain injury. It compares the effects of participant-preferred music, music the participant declares unpleasant, and no music/white noise on left peripheral visual field stimuli attention. Each participant is asked to stand in the middle of the room with the lights off; they are asked to track a laser pointer light in their left peripheral vision while looking straight ahead until they can no longer see the laser pointer light. The last point at which they can see the laser is recorded. This is repeated for pleasant music, unpleasant music, and no music/white noise. To determine preferred and unpleasant music, participants will be asked to list songs they strongly like and songs they strongly dislike. This is an empirical comparison experimental study.
