Improvisational Music Therapy Stress Reduction

Jacob Oakley, Georgia College and State University

Abstract

In my presentation, I will include the findings from my case study on the effects of improvisational music therapy methods in managing stress levels. My case study will include the use of improvisational music therapy methods on a group of college students from Georgia College & State University. The student participants will be given a survey to determine whether or not they are suitable for the case study by determining their current stress levels, relevant stressors, musical background (if any), previous experience in music therapy and so on. The participants will describe their initial stress levels before and after each session. Participants will mostly be involved in several group sessions where they will freely improvise as a unit and individually through various mediums and exercises. Participants unwilling to join the group will be observed in a 1-on-1 session with the student music therapist. I hope to find that improvisational music therapy helps to manage and reduce stress levels in the student body at Georgia College & State University.
