Presentation Author(s) Information

Scott York, Georgia College and State University

Abstract

Until recently, the abuse of prescription drugs has been a relatively unaddressed issue in regards to its existence on college campuses. Due to an ever increasing rate of abuse however, researchers have begun to shift their attention to this seemingly dark figure in the study of drug abuse. However, the majority of research leaves out a major factor in this, which is the culture behind it. Following previous research into the abuse rate of prescription drugs among Georgia College students, this study looks to probe into the existing culture of prescription drug users within the Georgia College student body. Through a greater understanding of the causes, culture, and prevalence within the student body; officials can begin to establish and build policy to address the issue effectively.Through the creation of a small focus group, this study takes an in depth look into a culture which prior to now has been predominantly overlooked on college campuses.
