Abstract

Most major best-in-class shippers are performing well in managing transportation costs and operations. However, even they have opportunities for improving total supply chain performance. The evolution of logistics from a cost center to one of strategic component is not occurring fast enough to accommodate the rapid changes that are transforming both transportation and other supply chain links. If ever more demanding customer expectations are to be met, and new efficiencies achieved, there must be greater integration of logistics processes within shippers' organizations, and greater integration of processes that comprise the substance of relationships between shippers and their suppliers, customers, and other supply chain partners.
