“Art is an incredible tool for communication in so many ways. This very project is a great example. Through these letters from my family members I have managed to learn new things about the people who are closest to me. I think I have also forced many of them to put certain thoughts and feelings into words for the first time. In return, I am sharing with them prints that illustrate my fond memories or perceptions of them. But aside from this project, I have been communicating through art my entire life. Before I fully learned how to read and write, I was drawing pictures (or at least trying to). Still today, there are often ideas that I cannot express with words alone. It’s one thing to describe something and another to actually show it. For me, there are very few things that compare to the feeling or bringing my visions to life and getting to share them with others. Through my artwork I am offering viewers a gateway into my mind—the ability to see through my eyes.” —Stephanie Johnson
