Abstract

There are many issues that are discussed when speaking about the prison system. However, when it comes to mental health the issue is seldom discussed. People with mental health issues are invisible yet make up a good portion of the prison population. Therefore, it is important that their issues are addressed. This paper will discuss the many challenges that people face with mental illnesses in prison, such as lack of services and resources, inmate and prison administration relationships, and integration of mental health inmates into the prison community. This paper will also discuss strives that some prison systems are making in order to make sure that their prisoners with mental health issues are given what they need to combat the problems that they may face. It is important that people with mental illness are protected under law. Therefore, policy implications will be discussed to provide reforms for dealing with mental health in prison.
