Abstract

Cinnamic acids are synthesized as intermediates to form useful pharmaceutical products. These cinnamic acids were synthesized by performing a modification of the Knoevenagel-Doebner Condensation. The modification consisted of the introduction of triethylamine as a basic solvent and the replacement of pyridine with 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP). Given the yield of the products, it was concluded that the modification was successful in synthesizing cinnamic acids.
