Abstract

In this paper I will examine the apse mosaic from the High Middle Ages in the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere in Rome, and its religious and cultural significance to the city. The apse mosaic depicts the Assumption of the Virgin and her coronation as Queen of Heaven. Meanwhile, showcasing a rarity for the time period of the Virgin in a co-enthronement pose with Christ. I will compare the previous scholarship done on this image by Mary Stroll and Dale Kinney and will argue the image’s function as medieval papal propaganda used by Pope Innocent II to promote his own reputation, the glorification of the papacy, and the importance of Rome, the eternal city.
