Evolving Strategies for Writing Feedback on Creative Manuscripts A Multi Genre Pedagogy Guide
Abstract
This chapter, written by professor and author Chika Unigwe, examines the written commentary she provided on a short story submitted for workshop in a graduate course she taught as part of the M.F.A. program at Georgia College. Citing Ann Lamott's declaration in Bird by Bird about the importance of feeling free to write a “shitty first draft,” Unigwe argues for the transformative power of revision. As such, she places “a lot of emphasis on revising” in her classes because, as she puts it, “it is in revising that the writer becomes.” The chapter concludes with the written commentary she provided on the graduate student's manuscript.
