Abstract

Purpose – This study investigates the relationship between board diversity and corporate social responsibility initiatives. It specifically examines the ethical implications of diverse boards and their influence on companies’ adoption and implementation of CSR programs. Design/methodology/approach – The study employs a semi-structured interview in the USA to evaluate how board member diversity in terms of gender, age and area of competence influences the moral foundation of CSR activities. Through an extensive analysis of multinational corporations, the research aims to uncover the subtle ways in which diverse boards shape ethical considerations within CSR decision-making. Findings – Board diversity (gender, age and expertise) may enhance CSR by fostering broader ethical considerations, inclusive stakeholder engagement and reduced groupthink, leading to more robust CSR strategies and a stronger ESG profile. However, cultivating an inclusive board culture is crucial to maximize these benefits. Practical implications – The findings of this research support the development of inclusive governance frameworks that embed board diversity and ethical oversight to advance environmentally and socially responsible business practices. Originality/value – This study contributes to the understanding of the link between board diversity and CSR by examining the ethical dimension of this relationship. By analyzing the influence of diverse perspectives on ethical concerns within CSR, this research offers valuable insights for promoting CSR through inclusive governance structures.
