Abstract

Outsider: The History of a Life and a Place is a collection of personal essays that juxtapose the fraught racial history of coastal Georgia with the author’s lived experiences growing up there as a disabled and queer Black girl. This thesis reckons with the pain of feeling like a perpetual outsider and also the suffering embedded in the air, land, and water of where the author is from: Brunswick-Glynn County, Georgia, an idyllic place flush with marshes and beaches belying the horrific inequities that fester there—a place where the rich history of Black autonomy and self-determination is concealed in favor of symbols of the Old South and obscured by rampant systemic racism.
