Description

We all live with race, but do you really see race? In this course, we will build an understanding of race in the contemporary United States through a variety of historical, literary, theoretical, and personal perspectives. This investigation will include texts by famous historical figures like James Baldwin and Lorraine Hansberry as well as a variety of media by new leaders in pursuit of social justice including Beyoncé Knowles, Ava DuVernay, and Childish Gambino. In addition to national figures, our work will include two local writers: Flannery O’Connor and Alice Walker. By the end of the semester, students will build a critical vocabulary to discuss issues of racial justice and will be able to put their insights into practice—formally, by writing a research paper and informally, by producing a group podcast.
