What’s in Your Wastewater? Analysis of VOCs Contained Within Wastewater Via GC/MS
Abstract
Determination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in wastewater may be achieved via use of analytical methods to identify the various contaminants within the complex water matrix. Wastewater is defined as water containing human waste and chemicals.1 The treatment of wastewater to remove the harmful substances is important to maintain a safe environment and human health. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) coupled with a purge-n-trap is used to detect VOCs from the headspace of the wastewater sample. The presentation summarizes the experimental design and preliminary results of the project. 1USGS. Wastewater Treatment Water Use. http://water.usgs.gov/edu/wuww.html (Date accessed March 5, 2015).
