Mindful Conflict Resolution Strategies in College Roommate Relationships

Abstract

Every relationship is affected by conflict at some point throughout the course of the relationship. The construct of mindfulness, enhanced attention and awareness to the present moment, has been linked to more adept conflict resolution strategies (Burgoon, Berger, &Waldron, 2000). Studies on romantic relationships have also revealed that more mindful individuals in a couple experienced lower levels of negative emotion and a more positive perception of the other person after an argument (Barnes et al., 2007) Although much of the literature on the impact of conflict and conflict resolution centers on romantic relationships, another important relationship to empirically examine, especially for younger samples, is conflict among roommates. Thus, the current ongoing study aims to determine if mindfulness-based strategies can improve conflict resolution strategies in roommate relationships.
