Undergraduate Biochemistry Through Service Learning: Combating Childhood Obesity Within the Milledgeville Community
Abstract
C-bEL (community based engaged learning) was initiated to establish a relationship between Georgia College and the Baldwin County community through student participation. The project enabled GC Biochemistry students to apply knowledge gained throughout the course to real-life situations. For the Fall 2014 semester, the local community issue addressed was childhood obesity. Over the four week period, students and participants engaged in both physical and instructional activities that reflected a healthy lifestyle. The project resulted in local youth becoming more active and eating healthier based on data collected by a Fitbit Flex (fitness tracking device).
