Abstract

Technology is always evolving and becoming important to every profession and hobby. Traditional photographers that use technology that is inefficient, no longer produced, or no longer being updated, are always looking for better ways to produce their work and get more people interested in the hobby. By asking the thoughts of my peers, fellow students, and teachers about their experiences and issues with darkroom photo and film development, such as having to manually set timers during development and ultimately adding extra time to the process, I realized the need for an application to help resolve these issues. I created the design for the app, “Dark Vision”, to streamline the film development timing process and it be usable in the dark and light, while having a simple aesthetic that resembles a dark room. The app asks for each option the user could need, allowing for additional options that may adjust times, then locking them in and showing the user exactly what they chose and how long each step will be timed for. Symbols and text show the user what they should currently be doing based on a timer while in light mode, but while in dark mode it uses sound and vibrations to indicate the current step. The conclusion to my research and design is to help make film development as efficient as can be by getting rid of the major issues, making the process as accessible and easy as possible.
