Abstract

The goal of this project was to create a Foley wind machine that is able to mimic the sound of storm winds to be used as a sound effect during a stage play. I built the machine from scratch using raw materials and techniques such as hand tightening screws, cutting and measuring muslin fabric, and trial and error via the use of various saws and power tools. The overall approach was to create a machine that could be “played” like a musical instrument by one person to create the sound of wind. Upon the completion and presentation of the final project I found that especially when combined with the digital footage of an actual storm, the machine creates an almost identical recreation of the sound of wind.
