Abstract

Women’s activism is absolutely vital to any college campus– in a given school year, the GCSU women’s center alone offers more than 80 opportunities for students to get involved. We define activism as efforts to promote, impede, direct or intervene in political or social reform in order to achieve important goals. In order to promote women’s activism, our group plans to raise awareness about the various ways young people can get involved on their college campuses and form a community where they can empower each other and themselves to broaden their perspectives. Women’s centers and other forms of women’s activism allows a safe space for women on campus, provides them with helpful resources, and fights against sexism and discrimination. In our class, “Sex and Resistance,” we are collaborating with the Women’s Center and learning its impact on our campus and the importance of having a center for women and minority groups on a college campus. There are many campuses that are not as involved as GCSU, and it raises the question of how female college students can get involved with activism when it’s not easily accessible. One way to do this is through service learning, which involves students in the community and perpetuates equality and social justice. Students who are involved in service learning discover how to serve their community in productive ways. Our service learning partner, the GCSU Women’s Center is educating us on women’s activism and encouraging us to take our knowledge and spread it throughout our community. In 2023 there are only two women’s centers on college campuses in Georgia. Our mission is to raise awareness for the importance of women’s centers, the negative impact of not having a safe space for women, and the other various ways women’s activism can take place in a college setting.
