Abstract

The purpose of this study is to assess abortion-related policies in the US from a historical and sociological framework. This project aims to address the potential dangers to our society after the monumental Supreme Court Case of Roe V. Wade was overturned. The 2022 US Supreme Court ruling, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, has significant implications for women and their partners. The presenter will outline the historical cases which established abortion practices as a protected Constitutional right, policies dating back to the 1970s which resulted in fewer abortions, the relationship between abortion and the social determinants of health, and the potential harms associated with limiting abortion access in selected states. According to the WHO (2022), the lack of access to safe, timely, and affordable abortion care is a dire public health emergency that needs direct attention from public health officials. As of 2020, almost one out of every five US pregnancies ended in abortion, and there has been an increase in not only the abortion rate but also the abortion ratio, which reflects the number of abortions for every 100 pregnancies (Jones et al., 2022). The presenter also will discuss the potential challenges of loss of access to safe abortion, and as well the potential for limiting other reproductive rights, such as sending abortion medications through the mail and access to emergency contraceptive pills.
