Abstract

Compared to 1 in 4 American women facing domestic abuse, 1 in 3 Hispanic women will face domestic abuse in their lifetime. In this project, we will be exploring the ways Hispanic women face stereotypes and how they face and resist these hardships. “I didn’t know back then, but I know now, this is how the worst of whiteness works. Insults are tied up in acts of kindness. Judgments are laced under cover of benevolence. No harm done is ever done on purpose. There is an excuse for everything” (Wild Tongues Can’t Be Tamed). This quote relates to the GC Women’s center goals and missions by fostering community and inclusivity through education, support, and developing leaders. The goals of service learning are to use newly acquired skills in real life situations that extend beyond the classroom. The goal of our event is to help others gain a new perspective on Hispanic women’s stereotypes and struggles. All of these goals are very different, but they all come together to accomplish a certain goal. As a group, we accomplished service learning beyond the classroom through our event, which gave attendees a new perspective on Hispanic women’s stereotypes. With the new perspective that attendees gain, they can create a community of inclusivity and educate and support others. This will create leaders that create inclusivity and can help others outside of the classroom.
