Abstract

Light and temperature are known to be the most potent factors that can regulate (or entrain) the circadian clocks; however, the role of other environmental factors in the regulation of circadian rhythms remains largely unexplored. Humidity, in particular, is critical for terrestrial insects' survival and fitness. Insects may use the information of daily humidity fluctuation to avoid excess water loss or dehydration. This project investigated the mechanism underlying the circadian rhythms at cellular and behavior levels. We identified the key molecules and clock neurons responsible for the sensory input and the entrainment of the circadian clock, leading to a better understanding of humidity as a potential zeitgeber for circadian entrainment of insect systems.
