Abstract
Foundational knowledge of organisms is necessary for understanding their biology, determining their evolutionary relationships, and managing habitats to support them. For some groups, this foundation is very limited. For example, our best guess is that there are approximately 150 millipede species in the state of Georgia. However, there has never been a published millipede checklist for Georgia, and records of millipedes only exist for about half of the counties in the state. The southern half of the state has been the most neglected in this regard. My lab is surveying the millipedes of Georgia and assembling a checklist to build this foundation, and this project proposes a focused sampling effort in the southernmost part of Georgia during 2023. Millipedes will be collected and identified in order to document biodiversity, ultimately paving the way for conservation of rare species and further studies on their biology. Tissue will be preserved in the field for DNA extraction. DNA will facilitate descriptions of newly found, undescribed species and future genomic research.
