Abstract
Cells normally shut down protein synthesis under stress. Cancer cells do not. Most mRNAs are translated only after the cell recognizes a cap at one end, but cancer mRNAs can be translated without it. How they do this is unclear. We tested the idea that these mRNAs fold into RNA structures that recruit the ribosome directly. This project examined RPA2, a cancer mRNA switched on by DNA damage.
