Abstract

This paper aims to explore the relationship between experiences of victimization and substance use on the Georgia College campus. Substance use as a coping mechanism has been researched extensively over multiple fields, this research attempts to understand connections between types of victimization and development of substance abusing behaviors. Surveys were administered throughout campus during the Fall 2013-Spring 2014 school terms to randomly selected courses on the Milledgeville campus. Preliminary data will be used for this analysis as surveys are currently being disseminated. Personal and indirect experiences with crime are expected to lead to an increased frequency of substance use. Factors such as types of victimization, types of substance, and perceptions of crime are also examined.
