Abstract

Any major film released today will be subject to a range of reviews. It is unclear, however, exactly what effect these critiques will have on box office profits. This paper provides an analysis of how different factors of movie production affect revenue, specifically critics’ reviews. Using ten years of data from Metacritic.com and Boxofficemojo.com I find that reviews will generally have a large effect on the financial performance of a movie. Other factors such as genre and budget also play a large part in a film’s success.
