Abstract
This study is aimed at exploring how online social networking differs cross-culturally between Ireland and the United States. Specifically, it will focus on how online social networking versus face-to-face interactions affects interpersonal relationships. Furthermore, it will compare and contrast the frequency of digital media usage between countries. Participants will be recruited in Ireland and the United states, focusing primarily on ages 16-25 but other age groups may be explored as well. A survey will be distributed to participants in person on paper and/or electronically through online survey. Variables being studied in the survey will include frequency of online social networking usage, culture relevant information, interpersonal relationships among friends and family, and emotional reactions pertaining to social networking. Results will be beneficial for understanding how the new mass usage of social media in online social networking may affect interpersonal relationships cross-culturally.
