Abstract
The illicit abuse of prescription drugs has rapidly become a more common practice among college students and drawn the attention of numerous researchers. Unlike drugs like marijuana or cocaine, the abuse of prescription pills can be a result of motives outside of simply getting high. These pills are often abused by students in order to induce sleep, increase focus levels, stay awake, and to treat pain. This study attempts to assess the rate of illicit prescription drug abuse among Georgia College students using an anonymous Victimization Survey issued throughout this year. In addition, the abuse rate will be further broken down in order to separate students who are members of Greek life versus those who are not. Through this I hope to derive an overall abuse rate among students, as well as determining if there is any correlation between Greek or Non-Greek life and the abuse of the drugs.
