Abstract
The notion of transgression suggests a confrontation of the honest and insalubrious aspects of the human condition. My presentation explores the cathartic nature of this condition through a series of larger-than-life fiber sculptures. Primarily using basic sewing techniques, soft fibers, and other materials, I construct stylized figures frozen in humorous exchanges of adult role-play scenarios, extravagant self-indulgence, and other uncanny physical sensations. The utilization of soft fibers alludes to familiar textures in childhood toys and the gratification of the pleasure principle that becomes more inaccessible as individuals mature. The soft material also serves to render the catharsis of transgression into something approachable and pleasantly tactile to the viewer. Actions suggested by the posed figures are not necessarily justified by reason, but by the integrity of the actions presented alone. From this, the viewer can experience excess, liberation of moral judgment, and hedonistic impulses from an imaginative distance.
