Abstract
This research will observe the relationship of women and men’s media coverage during the 2014 Winter Olympics on Twitter and five major newspapers. The purpose of this research is to find the difference in publicity between male and female athletes in traditional media outlets and social media outlets. Did one gender obtain a significant amount of airtime or press over the other? This paper will examine the Sochi Olympics’ trending topics on Twitter through the ‘hash tags’ or topics that people are talking about the most. The study will compare these findings with local and national newspaper articles to see if there is a similarity between the two. After concluding and analyzing the results, the study will seek to determine if one gender presides over the other in media coverage popularity.
