Abstract
College football recruiting has become a crucial part of maintaining an elite level of competition on the field. Signing the top recruits year after year is very likely the most important component in winning a National Championship. Every year Rivals.com, a well-known high school football evaluation site, comes out with its Rivals-100 list ranking the top 100 high school football players in the nation. The top 30 or so players are given the coveted 5-Star rating while the remaining players are given a 4-Star rating. What my paper explains is whether or not 5-Star players have a greater chance of making an NFL team than their 4-Star counterparts do. A lot of stock is put into the accuracy of these high school football evaluations and how the players pan out in college but my goal was to see if these evaluations could tell us something about their success. I gathered data from every player in the Rivals-100 from 2002 to 2008. My independent variables are star rating, race, position, home state, and college choice. When studying the observations over this seven-year span we can see how 5-Star prospects do in fact have a slight increase in the probability of making an NFL team compared to a 4-Star.
