Abstract

The completed and ongoing work is accomplishing/has accomplished 4 specific aims that were identified prior to the project: 1) Developed translational, workforce skills for students. Students enhanced communication skills (professional communication directly with community partners; presenting orally); collaboration skills (projects are completed in teams); and analytical inquiry skills (understanding and thinking critically about scientific research; translating science to non-scientists) through their interactions with community partners and their lessons to community audience. 2.1)Addressed community partner needs for social-emotional/mental health education. Meetings with community partners each semester identify important topics, and GC student topics are tailored to these conversations. 2.2) Taught valuable social-emotional/mental health skills. Lessons delivered included grit, empathy, and self-compassion, all of which are empirically validated social-emotional skills. 3) Impacted students and GC Journeys broadly. Firm partnership was established with Morgan County Elementary school. This partnership provided proof of concept that has also allowed me to expand to the Middle School, where the first project is currently underway (fall 2025). Importantly, this has allowed me to expand the partnership opportunity to my PSYC 3500 course, which is 25 students as opposed to 15 students in my senior seminar.
