Abstract

This research focuses on a literature review of the close reading strategy for improving reading comprehension with middle grade students and more specifically taking a closer look at how students decipher texts as they read. In addition, I examine how close reading can help children learn and apply methods to self-monitor and self-assess understanding of narrative and expository texts. I examine what a unit based on this method might look like with the close reading strategy put into practice. The presentation will also investigate how students can take ownership of their comprehension by creating text-dependent questions, collaborating with peers, and discussing texts as a class. Because close reading has been used more commonly with high school and college students, I will reflect on the efficacy of using it with middle school students.
